Hi Frank,
To get down to the last few seconds of arc in this process, I think you should be looking at a model of the Moon's actual limb, with craters and depressions and mountains and highlands.
That could be done. I'm not sure I have a good enough handle yet on the existing systematics to take that step, but it would certainly be nice to flip the DEM switch to "on" and see a significant improvement.
There's a user-friendly lunar elevation data set available from Goddard:
