When they started using arithmetic with negative numbers in celestial navigation textbooks? I noticed that common manuals of the early 19 century (Moore, Norrie) avoid them. So, for example when they explain the use of logarithms, they consider two cases: when the number is > 1, and when the number is < 1. Alex.
