Dick,
Welcome aboard.
You will find a great many people on Nav List with very different backgrounds. I, myself have never sailed. My great open-water adventure was the ferry boat from Port Anglese to Vancover. ( I did pull out my sextant and took a sight. )
My background was as a pilot flying around the world, USAF, then around North America, US Air Express. Learned navigation the way flyers do and it is different than sailors. The great joy for me is the different way folks on this list see the art of navigation. I ask questions and always , someone or many answer. I have learned much. Every now and then I tossin my two cents.
