I don't know why people try to do things the hard way. The day before you shove off, just watch the sky after sunset, remember what stars come out first and write down the time that you can no longer see the horizon, it will be about the same time the next night and the same stars will be up there waiting for you. And there are no surprises in the morning since you have been watching the stars all night.
