I misinterpreted the story. The claim being made here is much less interesting than the "light" article suggested. It's straight-forward. There are records of lot surveys that were recorded with magnetic orientations on the survey boundaries, not because the boundaries were aligned in any significant way based on the cardinal magnetic directions, but simply because some specific surveyors recorded their survey results in magnetic bearings. There are plenty of written records of observed compass declination (variation for navigators) in all of the regions addressed by this study. I don't see that this study has added anything except some entertaining confirmation of the established magnetic models.
