    Dates are ambiguous with regard to ordering.  Pick a random country:  when is 3/4/5?  Six possibilities.  That's the purpose of ISO-8601.  The lexicographic order is not a bad feature either, and one I've actually used for its intended purpose, but mostly it's the fact that it's well-specified and simple.  Keeping up with Russian month-names is not something you want in your telescope firmware (or in Internet standards such as email).  Just my two cents.
