Bob,
The benefit of 3 or 4 LOPs that are seperated by 120° or 90° is that systematic errors are opposing thus systematic errors cancel on the plot no matter the size of the cocked hat or rectangle. Also the 3rd LOP serves as a check against a gross error on the other two.
