    I prefer the traditional split horizon mirror.  It is what I learned with and am comfortable with.  I also prefer maximum light for star sights, but the scope is a factor in that too.

    That said, for at last some learners of celestial navigation today, if the objective is to know enough in an emergency (loss of all electronics) then why not use a whole horizon mirror?  Chances are that sun sights are all they will ever use, and the whole horizon mirrors is good at that.
