Assuming a sun sight is to be taken, the whole horizon mirror would suit using the sun itself to find the index error, via the semi-diameter method.
David Burch has an explanation online. There are other explanations of it to be found too. But being a fan of the old books, I'd go to page 219 (1852 edition) of Norrie and Coleman "A Complete Epitome of Practical Navigation" to see how it was explained 170 years ago.
