I’m afraid I cheated with the sextant I made for my PGCE practical project. I just bought a mirror tile; cut a square from the middle; masked off half of it; and removed the mirroring from the other half using paint stripper followed by ferric chloride solution. I’m afraid the shades were welding glass. Well, it was close enough for Government work, and you could make the mirror as big as you wanted. The most expensive bit was the bottle of ferric chloride, but I had enough left over to make another couple of thousand if I’d wished. For high days and holidays, I use my Hughes Mate’s 6” Three Circle. DaveP
