Dierick Ruyter’s booklet, published in 1631 in Middelburg

appears to be the earliest Dutch publication mentioning the plane scale. Page 9 has a good scan showing both sides of the instrument.
Ernst Crone’s detailed history of the plane scale (1927) does not appear to be online anywhere but I can easily scan the article from a library copy.
