If you're looking for "worst possible choice" stars, Eltanin or Kochab (or Canopus) might be more interesting targets, at least if you're measuring altitudes or clearing distances yourself. You're dealing with two moving targets instead of just one, but the cleared distances should be at least as unchanging as with Polaris.
(Skies have cleared over the Chesapeake and Jupiter and Saturn crept even closer together while I wasn't looking.)
