I made an error here. Stereographic does not take great circles to straight lines I was thinking of Gnomic, but that is not conformal. I am beginning to suspect the conjecture is false now...one way to check would be to get the formula for points on a isoazimuth given by Flexner https://www.jstor.org/stable/2304185?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents and see if it produces points in 3D on a plane. I suspect not but not tried this. I think both Frank and I have lost sleep and got distracted from things we should be doing by this, so I hope now some one will come up with a proof or contradiction.
