    Practical Haversine Use
    From: David Pike

Here’s another little haversine problem ‘Little Ship Astro-Navigation' has got me thinking about. The After adding up log cos lat + log cos dec + Log hav LHA the author says “The sum is a log haversine and will contain two figures before the decimal point and five after it.  Discard the first of the two figures (mathematicians will know why; others need not worry why!).”

I’m not a mathematician, but I would like to know why.  I can only assume he’s making a poor job of explaining the ‘bar’s and ‘9s’ alternatives in the log haversine/haversine combined tables. DaveP
