Igor, Brad, David and Tony, thanks to all for your thoughtful responses. We have a couple more weeks here at the beach in North Carolina, and I will try to run some checks on my sextant. I suspect, given the careful handling it has had, that any problems lie with the operator rather than with the instrument.
