I still think the observer is far more important than the sextant. I still love to use my 150, or thereabouts, yo octant and for the usual observations, i.e., the sun, moon, planets and stars, get excellent results. But then again, i like old cars too. Seriuously though, there are lots of old instruments out there in excellent condition - they just don't have all the bells and whistles of the newer models; and not the fancy price tag.

You consider that using the sextant in my work since sailed with the private boats. I have always had good results that i could compare in real time with electronic instruments on board. My advice is to buy a new sextant, and during its use always gotta take great care. It will certainly give you satisfaction.
