The Raft Book also came with a set of tables for determining Lat & Lon using just an accurate timepiece and observing sunrise and sunset. Accuracy was on the order of 5-10nm. This technique is significantly more than a " look at the natural world " approach. This is also a fairly unique developement, nobody else, to my knowledge, had developed a system that only requires an accurate timepiece.

The Raft Book is a great read and does use the Polynesian system of navigation - at least as people knew it in the 1940's. The system included CN but only as part of a " look at the natural world " approach.
