I got my Ham license in 2004 after getting lost on Mt. St. Helens, in the rain, a bit before sunset. We considered staying on the mountain if we didn't get out of the boulders before sunset. Getting hypothermia due to exposure would have been so much worse with a broken leg. Fortunately we reached the forest trail about 20m before sunset.
A friend had been bugging me to get my Ham for a couple years but I didn't want one more expensive technical hobbie. After St Helens I caved in and got a 2m which I still carry when traveling or hiking, though I don't really chat at all on it.
