Tony, Let me answer your last question (later I will disassemble my SNO Galileo scope and tell you about the extra ring). 7-x inverting tube is a Kepler telescope, or astronomical telescope. Kepler's telescopes invert the images. This property is irrelevant for navigation. One can modify the Kepler telescope by inserting extra lens to make the image straight. But exactly for the reason that it is irrelevant for navigation, the designers decided not to introduce this extra lens. All refracting telescopes used in astronomy are inverting. Alex.
