I think the main reason is keeping the object at the center. All inverting telescopes were always equipped with cross hairs, and this actually does not cost much. From my experience, they also help to focus the telescope: no matter where you aim it, you obtain the ideal focus when the cross hairs are clearly and distinctly visible.
