Sextant octant rubber eyepad preservation

Is there any recommended preservation treatment for sextant octant rubber eyepads? Perhaps there is some application that will keep them supple or reviving ones that are drying out and becoming less flexible. It's likely too that eyepads are not all made of the same or similar material so perhaps there isn't any single treatment. Any advice appreciated including 'just leave them alone'.
