    I don't think Captain Onedin has his scope in back-to-front at all.  I think it is a glass-free sight-tube for teaching purposes (or for finding a star on a rough day to get the estant arm in about the right place).

    Looking at the screen-shots I don't see a lens in there.  It would have been quite appropriate to teach use of the sextant with a sight-tube first, before moving to a 3x scope for sun sights. 

    The Onedin Line introduced me to Aram Khachaturian's Adagio from Spartacus (the theme music for the series).  I still love it.
