As to when Pub. No.229 was first published, I think it must have been 1970 (see attached "HO229 Date.pdf").  I purchased the six volume set in 1975 from Captains in Seattle the year I took the USPS Junior Navigation, class which was revised in 1973 to teach the HO229 method for sight reduction, (see "JN73 N75.pdf"). The USPS Navigation Class was revised in 1975 and also used the HO229 method for sight reduction. We recorded our sight data on the USPS sight reduction form SR 75 ( See "SR 75 Pub 229.pdf").  The Homework problems for both the JN & N class used excerpts from the 1972 Nautical Almanac.

I have been teaching JN & N classes for the "North Olympic Sail & power Squadron" for the past eleven years and over that period of time. I developed an Excel workbook which is used in my classes (see "Celestial Navigator 12 1 5.slsm").
