    the reason for female young black widow spiders is that their silk is thin and smooth and can be split for extremely thin crosshairs, also the elasticity made it easy to stretch tight without sag.
    before etching glass crosshairs and drawing extremely thin platinum wires was "perfected" (Wollaston wire) around late 1800´s it was as thin as any crosshair could be made reliably.
