The Declination is the arc measured along the great circle - between the equator and a pole (either Northern or Southern).
If you read the full text of my post it read: 'but entry to the tables involves parallels of latitude and, I suppose, declination, which are small circles.'. I was talking about lines of equal declination, 'declinobars' if you like, not declination itself, just like lines of equal latitude are small circles. DaveP
