From Galton's 'The Art of Travel' 1872 Possibly the 'Hints to Travellers' successor publications would cover this as well

Many years ago I read an article on how to re"silver" mirrors using tin foil (not aluminium) and mercury while at sea. I could not at the time get my hands on pure tin foil or mercury, and now that I can, I cannot remember the details. I think it involved rubbing the foil with mercury until it became tacky with amalgam and then sliding the clean mirror blank on to it and applying weight. If any reader can supply me with a detailed account I should be very grateful. Norie and lecky have both let me down.
