I tend to agree with your comment. I do not know the offiicial start date for winter in NZ (yes, I am sure that there is an official government site that will tell me!). What I do know is that the bad weather comes after the Solstice. I think of winter as being 90° out of phase with the solstice. We have just lit the wood burner and typically will use it until about October which is after the equinox. Bear in mind that over the past few decades the weather at 41S has changed, possdibly due to global warming. Often now at the end of winter we will say "Was that winter? I did not notice it".
As for Midsomer it comes to us five days a week. My wife is a fan of it and watched an episode earlier today. The John Nettles episodes are preferred.
