Paul,
I have no problems with battery fit? I've attached some pictures. I wonder if there was some manufacturing variablilty? I found my unit on ebay from a seller of militaria, but otherwise do not know anything of it's history. I don't believe any modifications have been made as all parts match the original manual diagrams.
