    If anyone is still interested, here are some images to help identify stars in the original photo compared with a Stellarium simulation. It takes a little back and forth viewing to spot these things, but with a little time they jump right out. I find the shapes of Canis Major and faint Grus unusually easy to spot in the original and in the simulation. Next step: estimate altitudes and then do a plot using the South Pole as the AP, Dec (S) as Hc for each star, and Hs values estimated from the photo, and SHA/GHA as a pseudo-azimuth from the pole/AP.
