One final note:
I mentioned Jose de Menoza y Rios, also known as Josef Mendoza Rios and in various other forms, and I mentioned that he was well-known in celestial navigation while Jorge Juan ...not so much. I did a quick offline search of the complete NavList messages archive for the past twenty years. Here are the totals of messages referencing each, excluding messages from the past three days:
For the 20-year period 30 March 2004 - 30 March 2024:
Jorge Juan: 0
Josef Mendoza Rios: 158*
I also found just one earlier NavList community question about Jorge Juan (from Lu Abel) and a reply back in early 2001. That question, so long ago, was inspired by... the very same 10000 peseta currency note and its artwork (see my post yesterday for an image) which Lu Abel apparently saw in actual circulation while in Spain. Although pesetas were still circulating in 2001, they were effectively "euros" by then due to legally fixed exchange rates, and paper euro curreny began circulating a year later. :)

* A little warning about searching and counting old messages: many NavList community messages, sent by email, quote back the entire text of a previous message. That can lead to "false positives" in message counts like this. My offline archive has been somewhat cleaned up to avoid this, but it will still change the totals. Not that it matters much at all! :)
