This is slightly off topic as it is not a Nav "technique", but may be relevant if you plan to view the forthcoming event on 8th. April.
I observed totality very near my home in August 1999. I was at a vantage point surrounded by, maybe, 1000 other witnesses. The spectacle was spoiled by a large percentage of them taking selfies, which, naturally, triggered a almost constant flash effect.
May I suggest avoiding obvious easy access vantage points and find a lonely spot, like off-shore?
