Thanks for your replies. I think that where I was going wrong was, when converting to tabular logs, adding 10 to just the characteristic, not the whole number.

I should point out that it must be five decades or more since I last uses logs so, to put it bluntly, I am struggling.

Next time I read about millenials having difficulty reading an analogue clock I will be more sympathetic!
