I definitely need a sketch of the proposed device to imagine it.
Fair enough! Reading my text again, it is not quite the model of clarity I had intended. :-)
Attached are CAD sketches of the layout. The top view shows a ray diagram of two celestial bodies---the first mirror set handles the bulk of the angle, and the second set the remaining small angle. The transparent blue frame is just a stand-in for some eventual structure. The orange cylinder is the sighting tube or small telescope.
