It also depends much on your eyes. 15 years ago, when I was only 50, I was able to take star distances o 0'2=12", in good conditions and posted many results for NavList. Now I cannot, with the same sextant, under same conditions. Some writer on navigation (I don't remember who exactly) even recommended the navigator instead of taking observations himself, to teach a young sailor to do this, leaving to himself only timing and reduction.
