Very interesting Article indeed ! And Thanks to you Dough for bringing it to our attention.
Seems to work extremely well under most circumstances, i.e. from a number of different pictures, as long as : " In principle, the geometric feature we are using requires that the images be conformal. " (cf. p 51) , i.e. the relative angles between stars must be kept.
Anyway, a quite impressive achievement !
