Great, from the 2003 messages, Bruce says that log-dec tables were negative log cosine, which matches exactly.

angle=12deg32.7min, log(cos(angle))=log(0.976125714)=-0.010494246, table=0.01049

angle=29deg18.6min, log(cos(angle))=log(0.871983845)=-0.05949156, table=0.05949
