As to "why bother", the following are my thoughts.
1. An inexpensive hand held GPS unit will tell me where Iam to wtihin a few yards. Can't come anywhere that close using a good sextant and the Nautical Almanac.
2. The batteries can die, at inopertune moments, and they probably will.
3.The sextant requires no electricity.
4. Last, and far from least, using my sextant, I can determine my position within a couple of miles, which satisfies my curiousity. More important, it is something that I have input in, something that requires a little effort and thought on my part. If for no other reason than that, Celestial Navigation strikes me as worth while.
