David, I should add that there are a number of copies of Schroeder's "Practical Astronomy" available on Abe Books for prices around a tenner and under, and you will find it the best use of a tenner you will have made in a long time! Not only does he go into the details of how to make and use astrolables, with lots of very good line drawings and examples, but he also goes into sundials, nocturnals and instruments for navigational use, amongst lots of other interesting stuff.
Here is another picture of my astrolabe from the top, by way of inspiration. I needed a scanner, Photoshop Elements and printable transparencies to make this - along with the disc of plywood to mount it all on.
