The daily rum ration was drunk neat by the more senior sailors. 1/8 pint and 95° proof. That is, about 71mls of rum, 7.1 gms of alcohol, or equivalent to half a bottle of wine. Junior sailors had the same amount diluted as "grog", and those under 20 got none. The navigation was fortunately done by the officers, who did not get a rum ration, as it was issued just before midday! They drank wine, but not in widely recorded amounts.
