Good Day! Bill , I recollect the phrase in the book was “hunched over the
sun compass”. I also thought about a theodolite, but
concluded in my own mind that it was unlikely. Setting up an instrument and
using it requires some modest training and then practice to gain confidence in
the data. Also, because the team was only 6 people hauling sleds, a tripod seems
like extra unneeded bulk. Tents, food, cooking equipment , drilling equipment,
and the borings which accumulate.

Bruce, I wonder if the "sun compass" was simply a theodolite using equal altitudes of the sun each side of apparent noon?
