I realised you were offering a little problem to those who love calculations, but I couldn’t resist the chance for some 'lantern swinging'. I did have a crack at the calcs to make amends. However, what I did on the day does show the amazing ability of the eye/brain combination to fill in the gaps, something which magicians and film projectors take advantage of.
Re: an “are you sure” bit in apps, the Air Almanac obviously thought of that. The Moon column is left blank whenever the Moon is too close to the Sun.
Re: Was it dangerous? In retrospect, I suppose it was, but as we didn’t realise what was happening until we landed, it didn’t bother us at the time. We were more concerned that we might not get the chance to get to Offutt and spend the bag of $s the RAF provided for our allowances on such occasions. DaveP
