Hey David - I just reread your post and realized I was thinking of the moon when I read it the first time! Don't ask my how I confused the moon for the sun (maybe because I had just finished studying the Moon Phase 2021 animation posted at the same time), but anyways some of my earlier thoughts have been properly realigned. I'm going to Google Kepler's 2nd law as I know nothing about it, but if you have a moment I would love to see a drawing of the concept!
