    Brian,

    You correctly say "A total eclipse of the sun is also regarded as night, and lights must be fitted and switched on if flying during the minute or so this lasts".
    I recall a UK information circular, stating similar to the above, but adding (to me, illogically) that a night rating was not required and it was not permitted to log such brief time as night flying!
