Assuming the cyclist was heading home from the Altrincham Sainsbury's near 53°23' N,  2°21' W then plugging the numbers into MICA along with the date 3 April 1898 gives a sunset time of 18:48 GMT.

At 20:40 GMT the centre of the Sun was 16.2° the below the horizon from that location and astronomical twilight ended just 15 minutes later. Apparently British Summer Time didn't come into force until 1916. Seems like a fair cop to me governor!
