It’s amazing what you’re led to online. I’m down to lead a talk/walk shortly on “Our Churchyard Trees” and I was sure I’d seen in a book I bought new in the 1970s, “Woodland Crafts in Britain” by Herbert Edlin, that the German Horse Artillery used ropes made from lime tree bark. Unfortunately, I can’t remember what’s happened to my book.
I don’t mind loaning books, because I know that if I forget who’s got them, I can always buy another from Abe Books for a couple of £s. However, this book appears to have turned into a classic and sells second hand from many tens to hundreds of £s depending upon where you can find it. Local libraries don’t have it.
This caused me to Google “rope from lime bark”, which led me here: https://thekidshouldseethis.com/post/making-lime-bast-rope (ecstasy for tree huggers). That page also advertised https://thekidshouldseethis.com/post/watch-a-time-lapse-sunset-through-a-solar-telescope which advertised https://thekidshouldseethis.com/post/venus-crossing-sun , and so on and so forth. This site could keep you amused for hours and provides excellent resources for lectures etc. DaveP
