Problem solved.
I am at long 175E not 180E. The earth rotates at 15° and hour. The time difference 60 * 15 / 5 = 20 minutes. The error in my calculation was 23 minutes.
Phew! That is a relief. I may pass my Board of Trade exam after all. The sun is out and the sun's max altitude has dropped below 60° so I may relax and take a noon sight. I should do an equal altitudes for long but that is too much like hard work. A long by chron in the afternoon will be easier.
