Fred,
Drill a hole into one end of a length of 1 inch x 1 inch wood. Drive a 1/4 inch coupling nut into the hole and secure it with epoxy if necessary. Screw this onto a camera tripod where it forms a vertical post. Now lash the handle of the sextant to the post using string, velcro or rubber bands.
