I don't know what sextant he has in his hand, but here is a quote from the obituary of the man who posed for the ad, Ray Buckner. "Ray entered the United States Coast Guard in February of 1946, serving throughout the United States for 25 years. While he was in the Coast Guard he served on Ice Breakers, Eastwind, Storiss and Duane, breaking ice at the North Pole and South Pole. " He died in 2007 at the age of 79, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
