They don't call them the "Roaring Forties" for nothing!
Just last night I weathered TS Omais. We were in the dangerous semicircle, with a CPA of 35 nm. We were anchored in a protected roadstead along with about 50 of our maritime siblings. I had out 9 shots at the waters edge and saw sustained winds of 45 knots and gusts up to 53 knots. The forecast was for 20-25 kts and gusts to 30(!) Of course it was between 2100 and 0200 local when it hit, so I was up all night on the bridge. I only had to use the engine a few times during the worst of it.
Today a seperate cold front is passing so it's still blowing F5 out of the SW.
Good times at sea!
