I agree with your analysis. When I mentioned 'scales' I meant diagonal 'scales', but I'd forgotten their full name. The interesting next question is, as probably very few of these devices were produced, and as it's use was probably restriced to the most wealthy customers, or the most influential institutions, how did it end up in the antique dealer market? Might it might perhaps have been an apprentices test piece. DaveP
